Student Teaching Experience

Twice during your studies and three times for students desiring to become elementary teachers, you will work in a school classroom for hands-on experience. You will work with a supervising teacher who has a minimum of three years of experience and is recommended by the building administrator. This experience will be coordinated with a school in your community.

To accomplish this we would like to know which schools are conveniently located near your home or place of employment. Please fill out the "Student Teaching or Practicum Application" and submit it to us. We will contact these schools and find one that is willing and able to give you the teaching experience you need to fulfill this part of your TTT course requirements. Do not contact the schools on your own behalf. For some schools a résumé is mandatory, so we require all students to submit a current résumé with this form.

During EDU 575 (Student Teaching One), you will assist in your supervising teacher's class for one hour each day (or one day per week for 5 hours) for the entire semester (17 weeks). During this time you will be given the opportunity to apply the teaching methods you have been studying in a supervised setting.

During EDU 579 (Student Teaching Two), elementary students spend one hour per day (or one day per week for 5 hours) for the entire semester (17 weeks) in the classroom. Secondary students will spend one hour per day (or one day per week for 5 hours) in the classroom for 15 weeks and during weeks 14, 15, 16, or 17 will spend two entire weeks in the classroom applying the program knowledge, skills, and dispositions you have learned.

Students desiring to become elementary teachers will also complete EDU 581 (Student Teaching Three) in the classroom, teaching students for one hour per day (or one day per week for 5 hours) for 15 weeks and during weeks 14, 15, 16, or 17 will spend two entire weeks in the classroom applying the program knowledge, skills, and dispositions learned.

During all of these classroom experiences, you will be assessed in the areas of instructional, assessment, and classroom management.
