Required Testing

Praxis I and II

The State of Indiana will require all future teachers to take Praxis exams to determine if they possess the requisite content knowledge to teach their subject. These are standardized national tools that measure students' academic skills in various areas. They provide assessments of content knowledge and academic skills to state education agencies who license individuals for teaching.

An organization called the Educational Testing Service specializes in offering a full range of educational testing tools. You can read about the series of Praxis exams that exist to evaluate the content knowledge of beginning and first-year teachers on its website.

The Praxis I exam contains three sections: Reading, Mathematics, and Writing. Every future teacher, whether in elementary or secondary education, must pass this exam.

The tests you will need to take are: (They may all be taken on the same day.)
   PPST Reading 10710 or C-PPST Reading 5710
  PPST Writing 20720 or C-PPST Writing 5720
  PPST Mathematics 10730 or C-PPST Mathematics 5730

The Praxis II exam is content specific. It tests a student's content knowledge of the discipline he or she desires to teach. Secondary students must pass the Content Knowledge exam for their desired area(s) of licensure. Elementary students must pass three Praxis II exams designed to assess a student's knowledge on subjects he or she will teach, as well as pedagogical skills and knowledge: 0011 Curriculum Instruction and Assessment, 0014 Elementary Content Knowledge, and 0300 Reading Specialist.

For Secondary the required tests depending on your licensure area are: (passing score)

At least two parts of the Praxis I must be passed before entering the Transition to Teaching program. All three sections and the Praxis II must be passed before entering into the first Student Teaching Experience. For elementary students this Praxis II exam is the Elem Content Knowledge exam 0014. The remaining elementary exams may be taken near the end of the program. You may take any exam anytime before the pre-determined date in the program when you must have passed the exam before proceeding onto the next phase of courses.
