Candidates who currently teach in a classroom and hold an emergency permit for exceptional needs: mild intervention will be required to complete courses EDS 536A-D Field Application, Performance, Competency Validation and Portfolio (4 credit hours).

Candidates who do not currently teach in a classroom and do not hold an emergency permit for exceptional needs: mild intervention will be required to complete EDS 575 Student Teaching One (4 credit hours).

FIELD EXPERIENCE
All candidates are required to complete Field Experience course components in EDS 520, EDS 522, EDS 530, EDS 532, EDS 534, EDS 540, and EDS 574.

Candidates without their own classrooms will be required to serve five (5) hours per week per course in a K-12 special education classroom. Indiana Wesleyan University will arrange candidates; placement with school districts in order for candidates to participate in a mild intervention classroom taught by a teacher licensed in one or more areas of Mild Interventions and/or Intense Interventions. The licensed teacher for students with exceptional needs will serve as a supervisor to oversee the application and completion of field experience components of the portfolio which are based on selected Conceptual Framework Indicators.

STUDENT TEACHING
Candidates who do not currently teach in a classroom and have not obtained an emergency permit will complete a full-time student teaching experience in K-12 private or public schools facilitating learning for students with exceptional needs. The student teaching experience will last for the duration of seventeen (17) consecutive weeks for five (5) full days each week. A teacher licensed in Exceptional Needs will oversee the application and compilation of a portfolio based on Conceptual Framework Indicators. A university representative will also complete observations and feedback to candidates. Candidates will facilitate students’ learning by planning, developing, and implementing learning and behavioral activities for the students. Candidates will also gain experience by attending case conferences, the Individual Educational Program development, and collaboration.
