Full Course Descriptions

Indiana Wesleyan University's Principal Licensure Program courses will fulfill all the academic requirements you will need to attain your K-12 Building Level Administrator license in the State of Indiana.

IWU plays a key leadership role by offering an IPSB/ISLLC standards-based response to the need for school principals to become instructional leaders who develop learning communities focused on improved student achievements.

Like all of IWU's College of Adult and Professional Studies courses and programs, IWU's Principal Licensure Program is accelerated. Courses are convenient and accessible. The entire program may be completed in 13 to 16 months.

The program is comprised of two phases, professional studies courses and the school-based internship.

The professional studies courses provide foundational knowledge of leadership theory, understanding of major issues related to legal aspects of school administration, and investigation of the theory and practice of collaboration with various stakeholders to resolve school issues. The professional studies classes meet on Saturdays at the same location throughout the duration of your program.

The internship courses run concurrently with the academic year and combine Saturday seminar meetings at a central location with regional team meetings at your team's school sites.

You know exactly when and where every class will be held throughout your program before it starts. You can schedule family and work commitments months in advance without fear of conflicting with your course work.

The Conceptual Model: The Principal as Servant Leader is unique to IWU.

The Principal Licensure Program has adapted the Indiana Professional Standards Board / Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium Standards (IPSB/ISLLC) as the program goals of the Principal as Servant Leader conceptual framework.

The IPSB/ISLLC standards have been aligned with the objectives of each course, the multiple means of authentic assessment within the program, and the culminating standards-based portfolio assessment process that runs through all courses.

The program goals are:

I. A Vision of Learning: To facilitate the development, articulation, implementation, and stewardship of a vision of learning that is shared and supported by the greater school community.

II. School Culture and Instructional Leadership: To advocate, nurture, and sustain a school culture and instructional program conducive to student learning and continuous instructional improvement.

III. Managerial Leadership: To ensure management of the organization, operations, and resources for a safe, efficient, and effective learning environment.

IV. Collaboration with Families and the Community: To collaborate with families and community members, respond to diverse community interests and needs, and mobilize community resources.

V. Acting with Integrity and Fairness and in an Ethical Manner: To act with integrity, fairness, and in an ethical manner.

VI. Political, Social, Economic, Legal, and Cultural Context: To understand, respond to, and influence the larger political, social, economic, legal, and cultural context.

Our goal is to make each PLP student a visionary school leader who:

  • possesses the knowledge and skills to lead a school while effectively managing the multiple facets of the principalship;
  • is motivated, competent, and qualified to collaborate on strategies that focus on what is best for students;
  • becomes a principle-centered Servant Leader with a sound moral and ethical philosophy;
  • masters the principles of adult learning that guide professional growth and development in their school;
  • has a strong knowledge of curriculum, instruction, and assessment undergirded by a working knowledge of content and developmental standards.
