About the Program

Welcome to IWU's Principal Licensure Program (PLP)!

The mission of the Principal Licensure Program is to provide a clinical and school-based adult learning experience for aspiring school leaders by encouraging, empowering, and equipping them as visionary servant leaders who model Christlikeness; and who are able to facilitate a culture conducive to optimal social, emotional, and spiritual health and well-being, continuous improvement, and successful learning for all students and adults

Core Values - Character - Compassion - Competence - Community

Changing the world one student at a time

Each teacher or administrator has his or her own reasons to become a principal. For some it is the awareness that their skills and abilities are best used as a principal in a leadership capacity. For others it may be the desire to be in a position to mentor teachers. For most it is their drive to lead an entire school to increased student and adult learning.

The PLP certificate program is designed for licensed teachers who have already completed a master's degree and have at least three years of teaching experience. The program is a seamless extension of the IWU master's degree in education and leads to a comprehensive K-12 Building Level Administrator (i.e., principal's) license in Indiana. Applicants who have earned a master’s degree from another accredited institution are subject to a transcript review process that determines whether additional courses will be required prior to admission.

Our faculty and curriculum are just what you need to become an effective school administrator and supervisor. The designers of IWU's Principal Licensure Program built into the curriculum a comprehensive array of current school leadership principles and practices that enable you to engage in research, dialogue, problem-based learning, collaboration and performance-based assessment from a K-12 perspective. The standards of the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium adopted by the Department of Professional Standards are the core referent for program activities and assessments.

After completion of the Principal Licensure Program you will possess the beliefs, knowledge and skills to be an outstanding K-12 Principal and Servant Leader.
