School-based Internship
The school based internship includes three courses that run concurrently with the academic year. In late summer, interns study the various facets of the principalship as applied to their school setting. During the school year the intern works closely with the principal-mentor and university supervisor to initiate leadership activities and document proficiencies related to the IPSB/ISLLC standard for the Applied Principal’s Portfolio.
The three courses of the Internship are:
EDL 610 School Principalship (3 credit hours)
The school principal must be able to facilitate vision, culture, management, school-community collaboration leading to create a responsive community of learners. The principal is an agent of continuous improvement linking the improved learning to the quality of life of the individual. The course will include a review of the structure of K-12 education at the state and local levels and examination of current knowledge, principles, issues, trends, models, methods, relationships, and goals of k-12 schools. Focus is on the best practices, duties, responsibilities, and competencies of school principals as instructional leaders.
EDL 612 Principal Internship (3 credit hours)
Experiential practice in the specialized duties and responsibilities of the school principal and related problems or opportunities will be emphasized. Instructional leadership, clinical supervision, curriculum development, staff development, program development, and program evaluation will be major areas of proficiency development during the internship. Proficiencies will be exhibited and explained in the Applied Principal's Portfolio. The intern will be coached by a practicing principal (Mentor) at the building level and a University Supervisor from Indiana Wesleyan University.
EDL 625 Principal Practicum (3 credit hours)
The professional growth and development of the aspiring building level administrator or supervisor will culminate in the presentation and explanation of the Applied Principal's Portfolio. The intern will show proficiency in the six ISLLC domains and priority knowledge, disposition, and performance expectations of the IPSB/ISLLC P-12 Building Level Administrator criteria. The intern will demonstrate the fundamental proficiencies to serve as an agent of continuous improvement as a school leader.
The School Principalship (EDL 610) and the Principal Internship (EDL 612) are prerequisites for the Applied Principal's Portfolio Practicum (EDL 625). Principal licensure interns will develop the Applied Principal's Portfolio aligned with the IPSB/ISLLC Standards for School Leaders as the "showcase product" of their school leader practices. The standards-based portfolio will reflect comprehensive P-12 experiential learning, proficiency development, and leadership influence aligned with the six conceptual framework domains of the IPSB/ISLLC Standards.
