About the Program
Welcome to IWU's Transition to Teaching program!
The State of Indiana is currently experiencing a shortage of qualified elementary and secondary school teachers and the shortage is only expected to increase as more baby boomers reach retirement age. As a result, Indiana's legislators have created a new law that will enable adults with a non-teaching bachelor's degree to become licensed elementary or middle school and high school teachers.
IWU's solution is a program called "Transition to Teaching" (TTT). The TTT program contains all the courses you will need to become a licensed teacher in Indiana with the potential to transfer your license to 40 other states through reciprocal agreements.
Who better to educate students on a subject than an adult with the knowledge and life experience in the subject he or she is teaching? You know your subject matter. You've studied it. You've lived it. The basic premise behind this program is that adults with a baccalaureate degree and work experience in a particular field possess sufficient knowledge on the subject they want to teach. Therefore, the TTT program contains no courses where content knowledge on a subject will be taught, but rather, IWU's Transition to Teaching program will equip you with effective teaching strategies, principles and methods to pass on what you know to your future students.
We believe that individuals such as you, educated adults with life and working experience, make excellent teachers. IWU is pleased to offer you the courses and teaching experience that not only satisfy the State of Indiana's licensure requirements, but also equip you with the teaching theory and techniques to be a world changing teacher.
The Next Step: M.Ed. Completion Program
Indiana Wesleyan has developed a special program designed exclusively for TTT program completers. This Transition Completion Program requires only 19 hours of M.Ed. coursework in order to earn the master of education degree. Those meeting M.Ed. entrance requirements will be eligible to join existing M.Ed. cohorts at the appropriate point in the curriculum sequence. Students may be required to travel out of town for a one-day orientation.
