Educating Children in a
Multicultural Society is collection of eleven essays by well-known
educator and author, James A. Banks. This essay collection provides
scholars and educators with a clear, concise synthesis of the theory
and practice of multicultural education. Banks paints a vivid picture
of how effective multicultural education can be implemented and
why it should be a priority for our nation's schools.
Banks' essays are sorted into four sections. The first section
provides the framework to support ongoing discussions of multicultural
issues influencing our public schools today. In the second section,
Banks discusses the value and necessity of knowledge construction
among learners and between learners and instructors.
The third section of the book presents essays focusing on five
aspects identified by Banks as critical to effective multicultural
education:
content integration;
an equity pedagogy;
the knowledge construction process;
prejudice reduction; and
an empowering school structure, climate and culture.
These five dimensions of multicultural education are explored and
discussed.
James Banks has contributed importantly to the clarification and
development of multicultural education. His new book, Educating
Children in a Multicultural Society, is an outstanding addition
to the growing body of multicultural education literature. For educators
and students who want to become active in the national discussion,
Banks' book is worth reading.
