STANDARDS FOR PAPERS

Students should be proud of their work. This is reflected in the way in which their work is presented. Standards for high quality college papers include TYPING on good quality paper. Pages should be STAPLED or paper-clipped together. Ease in readability produces a good impression which results in a better grade. Papers that are scrawled on notebook paper full of spelling and grammatical errors reflect a poor student self-image.

The following criteria is used to evaluate papers:

10 Fully completes the assignment, thoughtfully exploring the implications of

data collected.

- Shows substantial depth, fullness, and complexity of thought.

- Demonstrates clear, focused, unified, and coherent organization (effectively

using tables to present data, if necessary).

- Is fully developed and detailed.

- Demonstrates superior writing ability; very few mechanical flaws.

9-8 Fulfills the assignment and explores the implications.

- Shows some depth and complexity of thought.

- Is effectively organized (including tables where relevant)

- Is well developed, with supporting detail.

- Demonstrates strong writing ability; a few minor mechanical flaws.

7 - Adequately fulfills the assignment, exploring a few implications.

- Shows clarity of thought but may lack complexity.

- Is organized

- Is adequately developed, with some detail.

- Demonstrates competent writing; may have some flaws.

6 - May distort or neglect parts of the assignment.

- May be simplistic or stereotyped in thought.

- May demonstrate problems in organization.

- May have generalizations without supporting detail or detail without

generalizations; may be underdeveloped.

- May show patterns of flaws in language, syntax, or mechanics.

5 - Will demonstrate serious inadequacy in one or more of the areas specified

for the 6 paper.

4 or below - Fails in its attempt to fulfill the assignment.

- May be deliberately off-topic.

- Is so incompletely developed as to suggest or demonstrate

incompetence.

- Is wholly incompetent mechanically.

PAPERS SCORED BELOW 6 SHOULD BE REVISED FOR A BETTER GRADE.
