World Changer Initiatives

Ways in which this class incorporates world changer ideas:

This class incorporates Matthew 23:35 into their Community Health Assessment projects.  They perform an assessment of their local community using descriptive data analysis, interviews, and windshield surveys.  The students identify an area of their community that is "at risk" and develop a plan to reduce this risk.  Many groups actually implement their plan.  For example, a group in Bloomington discovered that children living in a poor section of town were at increased risk of head injury related to bicycle falls.  The students participated in a "bike rodeo" and taught these kids proper bike safety.  Before the children rode in the rodeo, our students helped fit them with proper helmets that had been donated by a local company.

Another world changing behavior observed in students during this course is a conviction to volunteer.  As part of their practicum, many students spend time in their community jails, crisis centers, homeless shelters, indigent clinics, schools--almost any community agency that deals with health-related issues.  BSN 74 had 50% of the students sign-up to volunteer in these agencies and share their nursing knowledge and their love. In the midst of busy lives with school, works, and families, these students are living out Matthew 25 and changing their world.
