World Changer Initiatives

Facilitator name:  Deb Drake

Course name & number:  NUR 205  Nursing's Role in Healthcare

Ways in which this class incorporates world changer ideas:

This is the first course in the BSN core program, so this is where the world changer concept is introduced to our students. In one workshop, I play the song "Angel's Chair" to the students (words below).  Afterwards, we discuss what made Angie a world changer.  It is pointed out that Angie must be an excellent hairdresser or people would not stand in line to sit in her chair. Thus, one has to excel in their discipline as a beginning place to change their world.  This is one reason the BSN program holds our students to such high academic standards. Then the discussion turns to the spiritual aspect of Angie letting the Holy Spirit work through her--showing love and compassion to all who sit in her chair.

Applications to the nursing profession are discussed.  These are too numerous to expound on, however, much emphasis is placed on media and political involvement. The most dramatic change I see in our students following this discussion is their involvement in professional organizations for the first time.  Many of them join one during this class. Many students become actively involved in public policy related to health care.

Lastly, because of "Angie's Chair", students are challenged to pray fro each patient under their care.  What an honor!  They are encouraged to be an angel to these for which they care.

During this one workshop, the world changer concept is initiated by:

  1. Excelling in our patient care
  2. Affecting public policy and media related to health care
  3. Joining professional nursing organizations
  4. Making a difference in the lives of Indiana health care and clients because an IWU "angel" touched them with the love of Jesus.

Angie's Chair

He stands in line to sit in Angie's chair on Saturday

He never really planned to go but stopped by anyway

He thinks he just needs a change

She knows he needs much more

As she trims his hair she silently speaks to her Lord

Chorus

In Angie's chair there is a prayer prayed over everyone

A kind word is always heard by anyone who comes

When they leave they're unaware they've met an angel there

In Angie's chair

As she picks up a magazine a tear falls from her eye

The pain that she's been going through is more than she can hide

Angie takes her hand and says hey I've been there too

But I believe there is a God who has plans for you

Bridge

She's never been to Africa or traveled overseas

But she's made a world of difference in Franklin, Tennessee
