Founded in 1920, IWU has become one of the fastest growing evangelical Christian universities in America. Over 8,300 students are enrolled in 70 locations and in online programs leading to undergraduate and graduate degrees.

In addition to its instructional programs, IWU offers off-campus support services for all of its classes. Students may access special university library services by telephone, fax, e-mail, or mail, and will receive assistance with research or bibliographic questions. It is the goal of IWU not merely to provide classes, but to provide an "extended university" designed to meet the needs of both students and employers.

IWU’s online programs are accredited by the North Central Association-Higher Learning Commission, Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), and National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
