About the Program
The Master of Science with a major in Management (MSM) program is a 36-hour graduate program designed to develop and advance the personal and technical management skills of working professionals. It is envisioned that successful graduates should be able to enhance their positions in both the profit and non-profit sectors.
The MSM is a career-oriented degree program with emphasis on knowledge and skill in working with and leading people in an organizational environment. The program revolves around the ideal of servant leadership present in both quality management literature and the Christian tradition. Strategy, decision making, quality, and the dynamics of change in organizations are all explored in the curriculum.
The Master of Science in Management degree program prepares students for managerial and executive responsibilities by instilling the core competencies required for success in organizations of all types in a technologically advanced and rapidly changing global managerial environment. These essential core competencies include leadership, analysis and decision making, organizational development and change management, organizational strategy, and managerial ethics, as well as functional knowledge of finance, marketing, economics, human relations, and international business. The learning perspective of the MSM degree program is on the behavioral, communication, motivational, and analytical aspects of leadership, management, and decision making in organizations.
MBAs are widely regarded as the heavy-duty "number-crunchers" in business circles. They are the ones who are expected to be able to do the statistical analysis, capital budgeting, process design, and analytical decision-making. In contrast, an employee with a Master of Science degree in Management is typically viewed as skilled in the behavioral and organizational aspects of management decisions and strategies.
IWU’s Master of Science in Management degree program features a less quantitatively and analytically oriented design. Students without a business, economics, or engineering background may find this program more appealing, particularly if they are in, or preparing for, a service-oriented career field such as health care, education and training, communications, or retail trade. By placing greater emphasis on leadership, communication, and strategic management, a MSM degree may also be the preferable path for those in, or preparing for, senior management and executive positions in which these skills predominate over analytical and quantitative abilities.
