About the Program

Indiana Wesleyan University now offers the Bachelor of Science with a major in Addictions Counseling online degree program for individuals who have already completed a minimum of 60 transferable credit hours. This 22-month program was designed to provide an in-depth education from a Christian perspective for persons who desire to understand and/or serve addicted persons and their families. Most coursework is completed online, with practicums offered at mutually agreed upon sites.


Program Objectives

Addictions Counseling graduates should:
  1. Understand the biopsychosocial-spiritual dimension of addictions.
  2. Gain an understanding of sin and God’s transformative power and grace using helpers and helping systems across the biopsychosocial and spiritual dimensions of addiction/recovery.
  3. Synthesize assessment and enhancement of client motivation within a broader context of assessment, treatment planning, and client/system change.
  4. Differentiate among and evaluate the theories underlying addictions counseling and apply them in practice.
  5. Critically evaluate research in the area of addictions and mental health.
  6. Identify and demonstrate entry-level proficiency with evidence-based practices in the field.
  7. Discuss the pharmacological properties of major drugs and their impact on the brain and behavior.
  8. Demonstrate an understanding of ethical practice with diverse populations.
  9. Prepare and facilitate educational lectures/discussions of addiction related topics.
  10. Effectively facilitate group therapy for addicted individuals.
