Qualifications
Because of the critical role played by our faculty, high standards
of expectation have been established for those who are selected and
assigned. The criteria for faculty selection are as follows:
Mission Fit
Applicants should enjoy a vital personal relationship with Jesus Christ,
and model and communicate the Christian experience to students as
related to life and learning. A
Summary of Wesleyan Beliefs*(.pdf) provides imperative
information regarding the institution's Christian principles and values.
Academic Qualifications
Master's degree required (doctorate preferred) in appropriate content
area.
Professional Experience
Applicants must have several years of practical professional experience
in their content area to enhance the nontraditional adult learning
experience. Faculty members will be asked to incorporate their theoretical
knowledge base and professional experiences in the classroom.
Ability to Facilitate Adult Learning
Applicants must demonstrate appropriate teaching skills to reach adult
professionals. The College of Adult and Professional Studies aspires
to bridge the gap between theory and practice through the use of practitioner-instructors
employing a "facilitative" method of theoretical instruction.
Hiring Process
1. Apply
After reviewing the qualifications above, qualified applicants should
submit an application. Applicants can complete the online
application here.
2. Initial Interview
If your qualifications match our current faculty needs, you will be
contacted by one of the faculty recruiters to arrange an initial interview.
The interview is designed to evaluate a candidate's mission fit, academic
specialty, professional qualifications, and understanding of nontraditional
adult learning.
3. Candidate Evaluation Meeting (for onsite faculty only)
A typical evaluation meeting is held on a weekday, 6-9:30 pm. Applicants
gather for an informal evening of small group work and presentations.
This provides an opportunity to assess how applicants work with people,
conduct themselves during a presentation, and handle the unexpected
in a simulated classroom environment.
4. Interview with Program Director
Once an applicant is approved from the evaluation meeting, final hiring
approval rests with the appropriate Program Director.
Orientation
& Development
New Faculty Workshops
The university provides two New Faculty Workshops to integrate new
facilitators into the university system. During day "A,"
faculty members become aware of the procedures, policies, and practices
of being a facilitator for IWU. Faculty members learn how to develop
syllabi and many other valuable tools. During day "B," the
university's mission, vision, and core values are introduced. Procedures
for developing devotionals, lesson plans, and basic teaching strategies
are shared.
Mentorship
Before a new facilitator is given their first teaching assignment,
opportunity is provided to sit in on actual class sessions. This allows
them to observe a group "in action" and see the type of
teaching style best suited for that environment, as well as an opportunity
for the faculty intern to teach a portion of the class and be evaluated
by the facilitator. The mentorship usually lasts 2 to 6 weeks.
First Teaching Assignment
A member of the evaluation team will visit the new facilitator during
his/her first or second class. This is an opportunity to support all
of the good things that the new faculty member is doing and on occasion,
to make the new facilitator aware of changes that might enhance their
facilitation.
