Adult and Professional Studies

Since 1985, Indiana Wesleyan University has been involved in an exciting new vision for adult education in Indiana. Through the programs offered by the Division of Adult and Professional Studies, the doors of higher education and learning have been opened for thousands of adult professional students.

By offering degree programs in convenient locations, by developing a learning process that is appropriate for adults, and by seeking to meet the unique needs of both employers and students, this exciting program has quickly grown to include thousands of adult graduates and students who represent over five hundred employers, agencies, and corporations throughout Indiana.

Program Objectives

The general objectives of the Indiana Wesleyan University Division of Adult and Professional Studies programs are:

To provide the background which students need for a variety of professional careers and to extend the range and nature of available careers.

To provide students with a comprehensive, yet practical, education through an intensive curriculum which draws on resources, theory, and knowledge of all relevant disciplines to enable the students to study, analyze, and evaluate problems from a broad perspective.

To provide training in the skills required for effective decision-making, as well as for formulation of short-range and long-range plans.

To extend degree-oriented educational opportunities to people whose occupations, family responsibilities, or personal preferences do not permit them to spend major blocks of time "in residence" on campus.

To provide an understanding of the importance of the application of Christian principles in a professional environment.

Faculty Selection Criteria

The key to the success of this program has largely been due to highly qualified professional faculty assigned to the classroom. The faculty, many of whom work in other professional roles, are dedicated to the integration of academic content, practical experience, and a Christian world view, each in a combination that supports learning. Because of the critical role played by our faculty, high standards of expectation have been established for those who are selected and assigned. The criteria for faculty selection is as follows:

A personal relationship with Christ.
An ability to model and communicate the Christian experience to students as related to life and learning.
Academic credentials and commitment to continued learning.
Practical professional experience in the content areas.
Demonstrated skill in the teaching of adults.

We ask that you review the information carefully prior to completion of the profile. The goal of this process is to identify candidates who already share a demonstrated commitment to the evangelical Christian life and who desire to make a commitment to services. A Summary of Wesleyan Beliefs*(.pdf) provides imperative information regarding the institution's Christian principles and values.
